Tour the Alamo Church Before Its Two-Year Roof Restoration
By Gordon Cook · September 18, 2026
If a trip to San Antonio has been on your list, now is the time to make it happen. The Alamo church — the iconic limestone chapel that began as Mission San Antonio de Valero — is getting a new roof, and once the work begins, the church is expected to be closed to visitors for about two years.
What's Happening at the Alamo
The church's roof is more than 100 years old and has outlived its serviceable life. The Alamo Trust plans to replace it, repair the historic stonework, and build a temporary protective enclosure over the church while the work is done. The project is expected to run into 2027–2028, alongside the new Alamo Visitor Center and Museum.

When to Go
The church interior is the part you'll want to see soon. Once the enclosure goes up, you'll still be able to walk the grounds and see the plaza, but the inside of the chapel will be closed until the restoration is finished. If you've been meaning to take the kids, the grandparents, or just yourself, this is the season to do it.
Don't Stop at the Alamo
San Antonio is home to four more missions: Concepción, San José, San Juan, and Espada. Together with the Alamo they make up the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the four missions outside downtown are free to visit. Together they make an easy day of Texas history.
