Texas Wedding Venues: What to Actually Look For Before You Book One

This week at Al's Hideaway we had another couple come out to walk the property before booking their date, and it reminded me — we get this question all the time, usually from folks who've already toured two or three other places and left feeling like just another Saturday on somebody's calendar. So I figured it was worth writing down what we tell them, because it applies no matter whose venue you end up choosing.
If you're out there searching Texas wedding venues right now, trying to sort the real places from the ones that photograph better than they function, here's what actually matters.
What to Look For in a Texas Wedding Venue
Exclusive access, not a shared calendar
Ask straight out: is it just your event that day, or is there a chance another party's cocktail hour is happening across the parking lot? A lot of the popular wedding locations in Texas double-book the property into morning and evening slots. That's fine for some folks. It's not what we do — when you rent Al's Hideaway, the entire 20 acres is yours. No strangers wandering through your first dance.
Somewhere your guests can actually stay
The venues that look best on paper often leave you shuttling half your guest list to a hotel forty minutes away at 11 PM. We sleep your whole group on-site — 13 handcrafted log cabins, 10 full-hookup RV sites for the family towing their own rig, and cowboy campsites for the ones who'd rather fall asleep under the stars. The party doesn't have to end when the reception does.
Who's actually running the show that day
Ask who you'll be dealing with the morning of. At a lot of places it's a coordinator who's never met you before that week. Jennifer and I live here. We're on-site the whole time — not because a contract says so, but because this is our home and we care whether your day goes right.
A place that photographs like itself, not a rental hall
Big oaks, real hills, a stone fireplace instead of a hung backdrop. If a venue needs a lot of draping and lighting tricks to look like something, that's worth noticing. Ours doesn't.
