A Fall Getaway in the Texas Hill Country: Cabins Near Bandera and Boerne
By Gordon Cook · October 5, 2026
The short answer: Late October and November are one of the best times for a Hill Country getaway. The days are mild, the nights are cool and quiet, and there is always something going on in Bandera and Boerne. Al's Hideaway in Pipe Creek has 13 handcrafted log cabins, 10 full-hookup RV sites, and 9 cowboy campsites, about 15 minutes from both towns. Pets stay with no pet fee, there are no cleaning fees, and promo code FUN takes 10% off two nights or more when you book direct.
Howdy, folks. The heat has finally let up, and this is the part of the year Jennifer and I like best. If you have been thinking about getting away for a few days, here is how I would spend them.
Why Fall Is the Best Time for a Hill Country Getaway
Summer in Texas is hot, and by October most folks are ready to be outside again. You can sit on a covered porch with your coffee in the morning and still need a jacket at night. The roads are good for a scenic drive, the towns have events on the calendar, and the crowds are smaller than they will be at Christmas.
A Simple Getaway Weekend
Day one: slow down. Check in, drop your bags in your cabin, and do nothing for a while. Cook a good dinner in the outdoor kitchen or the cabin. After dark, step outside. We are far from city lights, and the stars out here are the real thing.
Day two: see the area. Drive 15 minutes to Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of the World, for lunch and some shopping. Or head the other way to downtown Boerne. Our scenic drives page has routes if you would rather just ride and look.
Day three: take it easy again. Walk the property, visit with the other guests, and let your dog enjoy the place too. Leave when you are good and rested, not when the checkout clock says so.
What Is Happening in the Second Half of October and November
- Through November 2: Dia de los Muertos Tradition Trail, San Antonio. Altars and art along the River Walk. We have an altar on the trail honoring Jennifer's grandfather, Albert Banis.
- October 23–25: Cactus Rose Endurance Trail Race at Hill Country State Natural Area near Bandera. Great weekend to cheer on a runner and rest up after.
- November 7: Bandera Market Days at the Bandera County Courthouse, 9 AM, put on by the Bandera Business Association.
- Thanksgiving, November 26: Boerne's Dickens on Main is on Thanksgiving weekend, and the Old West Christmas Light Fest opens November 27. Boerne has not posted exact Dickens dates yet.
Go Midweek and Skip the Crowds
If your schedule allows, come Sunday through Thursday. Roads are quieter, restaurants have open tables, and the property is calm. Midweek is also a smart way to see the Hill Country's popular state parks, which get busy on weekends.
